Department of Pathology is equipped with state of the art facilities in including automated microtomes, stockinettes, tissue embedding station, cryostats, three Penta head microscopes, automated coagulometer, five five-part hematology autoanalyzers, Automated semen analyzer, an Electrophoresis system, automated strainers in Cytology and Histopathology etc. A comprehensive panel of over seventy Immunohistochemistry antibodies is offered for diagnostic care free of cost for patients. In the year 2011-12, transplant pathology services for renal transplants were started in the department. Three immunofluorescence microscopes are available in the department with phase contrast attachments. Immunofluorescence studies with antibodies IgG, IgM, IgA, C1q, C3, Fibrinogen, kappa, and lambda are being performed in renal and skin biopsies. Polarizer and analyzer lenses for microscopes were procured in the year 2011-12.
Surgical Pathology section processes 19,000 samples in a year with a broad panel of Immunohistochemistry and histochemical markers. Nearly 10,000 biopsies underwent Immunohistochemical studies in the year 2011. Frozen sections and cryostat facilities are available and are performed routinely for intraoperative reporting.
May-Grünwald-Giemsa, Papanicolaou, and relevant special stains are performed and immunocytochemistry (ICC) is standardized. The cytology laboratory is enrolled in the Quality Assurance Scheme of Indian Academy of Cytology (IAC). 18,000 samples are processed in a year with an extensive panel of Immunohistochemical and histochemical markers performed on Cytology smears as well as on cell block sections. Routine Touch imprint and squash cytology are performed for Intraoperative diagnosis.
The lab caters to routine hemograms, BM aspiration and biopsy, coagulation and hemolytic anemia workup. The External quality assurance scheme is followed for the coagulation with CMC, Vellore and blood counts with AIIMS, New Delhi. The lab provides a 24-hour emergency in-patient service in the main hospital. During 2010-11, diagnostic workup of 32079 patients was performed including 639 bone marrow studies.
Central Lab and Superspecialty Lab (Clinical Pathology &Hematology Lab)
The OPD laboratory under the control of Department of Pathology dealt with 65583 samples inclusive of hemogram, urine, stool, and semen from the OPD patients in the main hospital as well as super specialty block. Superspeciality block hematopathology laboratory caters to both Outpatient and Inpatient services in Superspecialty Hospital and Regional Cancer Centre. The lab dealt with 70768 samples including routine hemogram, peripheral smear, urine, stool and fluid analysis. Super-specialty block Renal histopathology laboratory dealt with 300 renal biopsies and Immuno-fluorescence studies
Department performs autopsies for Medical and surgical patients to ascertain the cause of death, the majority of which are limited needle autopsies and Fetal autopsies.
