The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology delivers high quality patient care simultaneous with intensive academic and research activities. The department consists of 4 units with 13 consultants and 10 senior residents. Each year 8 postgraduates were inducted into the MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology postgraduate programme. Since 2011 the postgraduate seats have increased to 13.

On an average 1,10,000 outpatients and 20,000 in-patients are treated per year. The number of deliveries and major surgeries during the year are 14,329 and 951 respectively.

The department is equipped with state of the art facilities for the assessment of the fetus and management of high risk pregnancy, screening and early diagnosis of cervical cancer through Pap smear and colposcopy, performing minimally invasive surgeries and procedures through the use of laparoscope, basic management of problems of infertility including microsurgery, and treating gynaecological cancers through oncologic surgeries and chemotherapy.

Undergraduate MBBS students are taught through bedside clinical classes, small group demonstrations and tutorials and theory lectures in addition to observation training of operative techniques in the Operation Theatres. They are posted in rotation to labour wards in 8th and 9th semesters for 10 days each where they acquire skills. Theory classes are also taken for the nursing students and OT Technicians.

Postgraduates undergo rigorous training in all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Bedside clinics, journal clubs, symposia and lecture classes form part of their training in addition to practical training under supervision in the labor wards and operation theatres.

The department is equally involved in high quality research. Each Postgraduate carries out a dissertation as part of the postgraduate programme under the guidance of the faculty. In addition, the faculty are also involved in ongoing research projects and produce a number of publications in indexed journals and contributed chapters to text books & and edited textbooks. It is also a centre for Postpartum programme and a Human Reproductive Research Centre under the ICMR.
