The Department of Medicine is the primary care provider for all medical emergencies seen in the Emergency Medical Services. A large number of patients with acute medical conditions such as heart attack, stroke, sepsis, poisonings, envenomations, and renal failure are treated daily. Most of these patients are referred from other hospitals, including medical college hospitals in Puducherry and nearby areas in Tamil Nadu. Many of them are acutely-ill requiring life-support, for which the Department runs a well-equipped 16-bedded ICU manned by a full-time consultant. The Department routinely offers invasive diagnostic and treatment modalities such as kidney biopsy, bone marrow biopsy, plasmapheresis, and temporary cardiac pacing. Each unit has approximately 20 beds for inpatient care. 8630 patients were treated as inpatients during the year 2012. Further, the Department provides clinical consultancy services to other departments of the Institute.
In addition to the patient care services, the Department of Medicine also provides certain laboratory services through its Side-Lab. This lab offers the following investigations – fully-automated complete blood counts; cell counts on body fluids; glycated haemoglobin measurement by HPLC; foot evaluation for diabetes patients; bone densitometry; and color Doppler echocardiography.
The Department runs a daily outpatient clinic in the morning hours on all working days. In addition, special clinics are run in the afternoons. The schedule of the outpatient services and the number of patients treated in each clinic has been provided below.
